A Brief History of the Liston Tennis Club
The Liston Tennis Club was established on its current site in Commonwealth Reserve in 1926 on land that was previously occupied by a Timber and Forage Yard. The establishment of the Liston Tennis Club at that time was an integral part of the Commonwealth Reserve becoming a place of waterfront public recreation. Since that time, the Liston Tennis Club has been an important recreational facility for local residents.
The Liston Tennis Club was a leader in the provision of night tennis to the residents of the western suburbs. Original lighting was installed pre World War II and has been maintained and improved over the years. The most recent upgrade being officially opened by Clubmember and Premier, Steve Bracks on the 27th of April 2001. The six courts at the site now have state of the art lighting that is well patronised by members and guests participating in competition pennant, coaching and social tennis.
In 1976 the current brown brick clubhouse replaced a dilapidated weatherboard structure. Since then, that building has been jointly upgraded by Hobson’s Bay City Council and the Club in 2005 in order to cater for the clubs needs, as well as aesthetically blending into the surrounds of Commonwealth Reserve. In January 2006, the Club completed the final stage of the rebuilding process by re-opening it’s six upgraded courts with Rebound Ace (Air) installed, much to the playing enjoyment of members.
The Liston Tennis Club currently has in excess of 600 financial members and the fourth largest Tennis Victoria affiliated Club in Melbourne. There are presently 24 junior teams participating in the local Western Region Tennis Association (WRTA) junior competition. There are 6 senior teams participating in Saturday afternoon WRTA competition and 11 teams playing in the night competition held at the courts on Tuesday (Men’s) and Wednesday (Ladies) evenings.
